WebDec 7, 2024 · Fatwood is any wood of a conifer with a really high pitch/resin content. Sapwood is the outer layer of young wood growth on any tree. Sapwood is responsible for the water transport from the roots to the leaves. I guess that sapwood can sometimes also be fatwood (like the example you gave). However, the terms are not related. Coniferous tree sap is a viscous liquid that contains terpene, a volatile hydrocarbon. Over time the evaporation of the terpene changes the state of the sap; it slowly gets thicker until it hardens into resin. New fatwood leaks the sticky sap, while in aged fatwood the sap has hardened and is no longer sticky. At every stage of the aging process, fatwood will burn readily, unless excessively damp.
