Megacolon in people
WebMegacolon is een ziekte waarbij een deel van de dikke darm opgerekt raakt door een ophoping van feces. Megacolon betekent dan ook 'grote dikke darm'. Meestal wordt de ophoping aangetroffen in het laatste stuk van de dikke darm, het rectum (endeldarm), maar het kan zich ook uitbreiden naar het hoger gelegen sigmoïd. WebMEGACOLON. Bij een megacolon is er sprake van een verwijding en verslapping van een gedeelte van de dikke darm. Doordat de gladde spieren van de darm niet voldoende geprikkeld worden is de peristaltiek erg slecht. Hierdoor wordt de voedselmassa niet op de goede manier doorgevoerd, en kan gaan ophopen.
