Ribozymes and evolution
Webb25 juni 2024 · Systems of ribozymes could form the basis for important aspects of prebiotic evolution, such as the early stages of the genetic code of protein translation, a ‘major evolutionary transition’ 11. Webbproposed time in evolution before modern protein synthesis, probably more than 3.8 billion years ago, when RNA was both the main catalytic and informational molecule. Later in evolution, the catalytic roles of most ribozymes were presumably taken over by proteins, leaving only traces of RNA catalysts as coenzymes in many reactions (White 1976).

Webb13 mars 2009 · Such analysis has shown that evolution has equipped different classes of ribozyme with different catalytic strategies, based on either metal ions or the transfer of protons. The polypeptide backbone of proteins is electrically neutral, whereas nucleic acids are polyelectrolytes with charged phosphate groups at physiological pH.
